Old Photograph of Grindleford - Silver Band Celebration

Old Photograph of Silver Band Celebration (Grindleford)

Lettering on the drum announces this is the Grindleford Silver Band, but what are the players doing in their overcoats and hats, posed here on the field known as “The Grinsey”?

Perhaps it was after a weekday's evening practice, and someone had a camera? Or some special celebration or anniversary, and the photo had to be taken outdoors.

The latter seems more likely as it must have been rehearsed beforehand. Jim Outram, who is standing at the back, just to the left of the drum, with a walking cane, but no instrument, is wearing his WWI Medal! Meanwhile, the gentleman standing on his left (our right) with a bow tie appears in close-up to be wearing a Services cap.

‘Dad's Army’, huh? Apart from the ‘Rent Collector’, on the left...

This is one of several old postcards contributed to the ‘Grindleford Then and Now’ Exhibition in October 2004.
