Charles King & Martyr's Church, Peak Forest (1999)

Recent Photograph of Charles King & Martyr's Church (1999) (Peak Forest)

The building in this photograph dates from 1876, erected by the Duke of Devonshire at a cost of £6000, to replace the original chapel, built towards the end of the Civil War by Christiana, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire to the memory of her son Charles who had died in 1643, fighting for his namesake, King Charles I.

The original chapel was demolished about 1880, and stones from it were used in the building of a Reading Room nearby.
