St John's Church, Ashley (Hugo Meynell Monument)

Recent Photograph of St John's Church (Hugo Meynell Monument) (Ashley)

The church is - for want of a better word - cluttered... Yet despite of all this exuberant stuff and richness of design, there was a real sense of peace and reverence. Perhaps the monument to Hugo Meynell sums it up: it is a marble putto by Nollekens, but with the simplest of inscriptions "Sacred to the memory of Hugo Meynell who died May 1800". Other memorials are larger, grander and pure showmanship (pompous!) but this is simple and classy.
