ALTON-BARNES, a parish in the hundred of SWANBOROUGH, county of WILTS, 7 miles (E.) from Devizes, containing 110 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Wilts, and diocese of Salisbury, rated in the king's books at £6. 18. 11½, and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. Mary.
