Some Memorial Inscriptions - Ashbourne, Derbyshire
St Oswald's Churchyard, Cemetery and War Graves

Note: there are no pre-1740 Grave Stones in this Churchyard.
About 30 years ago about 80 stones were lifted at the entrance to the church grounds. It was intended they would be erected against the church boundary wall, but the vicar at that time thought it would be too costly to do the job, so he decided that the stones should be taken away and dumped, in the Mayfield area. This information came from one of the remaining workmen who had to do this dastardly deed. The vicar was never forgiven, and this person also told me that when this vicar died, his stone was lifted and dumped.

ST OSWALD'S CHURCHYARD
C1. This Tablet is lying to the East side of the Church

This Stone
Is placed by some friend to record the memory of
John PETERSON
A native of Norway who during the war with France
was taken prisoner from on board a French Ship
"Misio" and with other fellow prisoners was sent to
this Town for security. Having been presented with a
copy of the Holly Scripture in his native language he
perused them with unremitted attention and through
the Divine Blessing on a regular and consistent
attendance on the means of grace in this church he
became a truly devoted and humble Christian and
gained the esteem and affection of his Employers
and many other who will longer remember his worth
He counted his privilege to be a door keeper in this
House of God and stirred up many by his example
and persuation to zeal for the extension of the
Redeemers Kingdom, showing how much may be
done by on talent well employed.
Instead of returning to his native Country like other
Prisoners of War. On the restoration of peace in 1814
He remained in this adopted Country doing to the
Utter most of his power the works of Heavenly
Master until on the 10 December 1847 aged 70 he
Resigned his body to his native earth and his spirit
unto God gave it.
Reader go and do thou like wise
