Mam Tor in Winter, Castleton

Recent Photograph of Mam Tor in Winter (Castleton)

Mam Tor was known as the ‘Mother Mountain’ by the Celts, and on the summit (1,695 ft) are the remains of an Iron Age Hillfort, which stands on the site of a Bronze Age settlement dating back even earlier, to 1,000BC.

It is connected to nearby Lose Hill (1,563ft) by an ancient trackway.
