The Fold & Bulls Head, Foolow

Recent Photograph of The Fold & Bulls Head (Foolow)

‘X’ marks the spot of ‘The Fold’ (now called ‘Byways’) where William Elliott - great grandfather of the photograph's contributor, Mable Porozynski - was born in 1831. Directly ahead (the long white building) is The Bull's Head Inn - known briefly as ‘The Lazy Landlord’.

Somehow the name didn't go down too well with the locals, any more than did its “sister” pub in Eyam, formerly ‘The Royal Oak’, and renamed ‘The Prancing Pony’ with a view to giving it a trendy image. Should I mention what it was nicknamed to locally? Oh, why not, such frivolity might be lost unless I do ... ‘The Bonking Donkey’...

The image dates from 1983.
