Pictures of the Past : The Chequers Inn (1), Froggatt

Old Postcard of The Chequers Inn (1) (Froggatt)

The Chequers Inn at Froggatt dates from the 16th century. It is the only one in the Peak to display the sign of ‘chequers’ - a very ancient symbol for an Inn, or ‘taberna diversoria’ probably imported into this country by the Romans.[1]

The caption on this postcard says "Chequers Froggatt Sheffield 1907". There is also another postcard of The Chequers Inn (2) taken from the opposite direction.
