Pictures of the Past : Horsley Village (c.1890), Horsley

Old Photograph of Horsley Village (c.1890) (Horsley)

This photograph has been contributed by Trevor Owen.
Trevor suggests it may have been taken from around the French Lane/Dovecote junction with Church Street, in Horsley, possibly around 1890.

The photograph is one of a collection belonging to the late Mrs Phyllis Ruby FUTTER (nee YEOMANS 1910-1998). Mrs Futter's notes, from when the photograph was loaned to the Church for a display say:-

"Faded one taken level with Morris's up the village addressed to Mrs Priest"

The photograph has been stuck to what was originally a prize award card, perhaps to make it stronger for display purposes, although the card itself is now in poor condition. Possibly Mrs Futter meant that the card was sent originally to a Mrs Priest as it also has a Victorian postmark which is partly visible through the card.

The wording of the award is also partially visible, and by reversing the image it's possible to read:-

.. Her Gracious Majesty Queen....

July 24th and 25th 1901
