The inscription on this unusual memorial reads as follows:

Charles Edward SOLLY for 8 years in charge of Cressbrook Mill.
Died 5th January 1898 aged 33years.

Charles SOLLY was mill manager at Cressbrook Mill for the Greg Brothers of Styal, and when he died Mary WORTHINGTON, of Cressbrook Hall, funded the building of this stone seat, half way up the hill from the mill to the village as a memorial, to allow workers to sit down to rest, on their way home from work.

Charles SOLLY lived in the village at Rock House, with a housemaid and a cook called Harriet SUTTON.
