Old Photograph of Nether Padley - Padley Gorge

Old Photograph of Padley Gorge (Nether Padley)

This steep sided valley carries the Burbage Brook down towards Grindleford Station - you are higher than the tops of the trees from this vantage point! The promontory on the skyline - ‘Bonfire Rock’ - was possibly the site of one of the chain of beacons used in Elizabeth I's signalling the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, but for certain in the more recent celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Beyond it is Froggatt Edge, from which the ground falls steeply away towards the Haywood.

In contrast, here is a more recent photograph of Padley Gorge, looking upwards, in the direction of this viewpoint (although there are fewer leaves on the trees!)

This is one of several old photographs acquired after a sort-out at the Peak National Park Authority's Study Centre.
