The Tithe Barn, HartpuryThe Tithe Barn is directly opposite St Mary the Virgin Church, and believed to be the second oldest in the county. The photograph possibly doesn't convey the impression of its size - it is, actually very tall. Compare the height with the height of the green gate - which is a standard size. The bay which you see sticking out has an opening almost to the full height of the bay, perhaps about 12 feet tall, presumably designed for admitting carts piled high with hay, or other produce paid as tithes (taxes) to the Church. Hence the term “Tithe Barn”. It is still in active use, but now provides housing for rare-breed cattle. (Information provided by Rosemary Lockie)
