Inside St John the Evangelist's Church, ShobdonShobdon Church is unique: described as ‘Strawberry Hill Gothic’ by some. Its design and construction was by Hon. Richard Bateman, uncle of 2nd VIscount Bateman of Shobdon Court, beginning in 1705. Richard was a friend of Horace Walpole, and a member of the ‘Committee of Taste’, and the result was Walpole's house at Strawberry Hill, and the church here at Shobdon. The white paintwork gives an overall impression of light and a feeling of airiness is further enhanced by hanging arches, and the canopy over the pulpit which appears to be captured in mid-descent from above!
