Dell Filling Station, Oakamoor

Recent Photograph of Dell Filling Station (Oakamoor)

The Dell Filling Station stands alone - seemingly a casualty of the ‘super-tankers’ delivering larger amounts of ‘gas’ to the more swish petrol stations with their 24/7 retail outlets, or perhaps everyone now uses the by-pass.

My first thought seeing the stone wall behind it was that it was part of an embankment for a railway line, but no. Thanks to a message thread on the Midlands Heritage Forum[1] in the ‘Miscellaneous’ category in 2008, I was able to discover it was the wall of Oakamoor's lime kilns. The kiln was a brick lined ‘pot’ with a stone face which was built into the bank, and the burnt lime was then collected from the bottom through a drawhole.
