Birchwood Methodist Schoolroom, Birchwood

Recent Photograph of Birchwood Methodist Schoolroom (Birchwood)

The Schoolroom is an integral part of the Methodist Chapel, Birchwood. Although Sunday School was conducted here, effectively, this was the first day school for the village children. Attendance in Victorian times was quite good, even though parents were expected to pay. For example - 1865 - 2d per week and a penny for siblings: 1871 - 6d per week. The original School Register is in the keeping of the Derbyshire Ancestral Research Group. During the 1950's and 60's, a very popular Youth Club was held weekly.
