Old Market Hall, Bakewell

Recent Photograph of Old Market Hall (Bakewell)

The Old Market Hall in Bakewell adjoins the Market Square on the left of this photograph, which in the 1950s and 60s was the place to be on a Mondays - full of market stalls and thronged with people hoping to find a bargain. Many of the goods on sale were genuinely good value for money - “seconds” rejected by the High Street stores because of minor flaws. My mother carpetted her staircase from one of the stalls for a fraction of the price of new, and the stair carpet was still in use 30 years later!

The Market Building itself now (“now” in 2003) houses the Tourist Information Office.
