St John the Baptist's Church, Chelmorton (1999)Chelmorton is equally accessible by road, from either the A6 Bakewell to Buxton road, or from the A515 Ashbourne road to Buxton, and is said to be the highest village in Derbyshire, at over 1200 feet. The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) says St John the Baptist Church was built in 1111, though other sources date it as 13th century. Until the late 19th century, Chelmorton was one of the many chapelries of Bakewell. (Information provided by Rosemary Lockie)
