Gravestone of Major General Sir Fabian Ware, Amberley
Major General, Sir Fabian Arthur Goulstine Ware
Born at Clifton Bristol, 17 June 1869, Died at Amberley 28 April 1949, age 79.
He was the founder of the Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission.
[In brief]
At the outbreak of the 1st World War he was deemed too old (45yrs) to be accepted by the
Army so he offered his services to the Red Cross. He arrived in France in September 1914,
where he joined a Red Cross Unit. In the lull between the fighting, the Red Cross Unit
started to collate details of the dead, and that is how it all started.
