Of Berkeley the sum of 300 to be paid in six Months
After the decease of his Wife and to be then invested in
Names of the Vicar and Churchwarden the Interest and
Annual produce to be laid out in the purchase of Coals
And Blankets to be distributed at Christmas annually
To such poor deserving persons in Berkeley as the
Vicar and Churchwarden shall select.
This legacy became payable in July 1839, and was then
Invested in the purchase of 324l, 6s, 6d three per cent
Consols which now stand in the joint names of

Commanding 2nd Regt of Grenadiers in the service of
The Honourable The East India Company in the Bombay Presidency
He fell wounded by a cannon shot whilst leading on the brigade He
Commanded to the attack of the Hill Fort of Punella, in the district of Kolapore
on the 27th day of November 1844 aged 57 years. To the inexpressible grief of
his affectionately attached children and relatives, t
His Military Career extended over 40 years of active service in India
and the despatches of the several commanders under whom he served as well as
the repeated honourable mention of his name in General Orders of the Army
Attest the gallantry of his conduct and the zealous discharge of
The duties of his important command
He possessed in an eminent degree a most amiable and kind disposition and
was beloved and lamented by all who had the happiness of knowing him
The Officers of his regiment earnestly desirous of testifying their
admiration of his many virtues and of evincing their sincere regard
and affection for his memory have erected this monument
He lived and honour to an honourable profession,
and he died the death of the righteous and the brave.
