St Mary de Lode stands in a 1960s square, beyond the cathedral precinct and is reached via two gatehouses on my route. This view shows the exterior and Martyr's Memorial - the site where Bishop Hooper was burnt to death in 1556.

Norman crossing tower and 13th century chancel, the nave and aisles late Georgian. The west end (under the gallery) now serves as a hall, and this was in use for a German class at the self-styled University of the Third Age.

I went away and returned 20 minutes later, assured of getting in...
