St Mary's Churchyard

See also Painswick Tombstone Conservation Project, begun in 2006 to catalogue and restore the famous Table Tombs and Monuments in the Churchyard. The Cemetery on Painswick Hill was, according to Kelly's Directory of 1923, laid out in 1863, with a burial board of 8 members, but was later adopted by tht town, and is now in the care of Painswick Parish Council.

A176. To the memory of the late William HOGG,
Who died at a very advanced aged on the
8th of November 1800. He was for fifty years
a much esteemed gratuitous preacher of the
Gospel in the Tabernacles of London, Bristol
Rodborough and various places in this and
adjoining counties. It is incredible the sums
of money he expended in the charity, they that
be wise shall shine as the firmament and they
that turn many to righteousness as the stars
forever and ever
Betty his excellent wife died 31st March 1780
Her kindness and liberty to all especially to
the poor was gratefully remembered and often
expressed for many years after her decease
They had eight sons and four daughters whom
they lived to see comfortably established in life
