Old Photograph of Grindleford - Carnival Preparations

Old Photograph of Carnival Preparations (Grindleford)

This delightful little tableau may be in preparation for a parade such as we see on a companion photograph of a Carnival Parade. It appears to be of similar vintage, and likewise the ‘horse-power’ is provided by a horse.

The site of the photograph is a mystery; my own opinion (which may be incorrect) is that it's on the site where the present Eyam Woodlands Cottages were built. It must have been open farmland before that, and it's one of the few places in Grindleford where the land is flat, but slightly raised. Or else it's off the road to Hathersage, past the Village Green, although as far as I'm aware the buildings around there haven't changed much over the years.

Looks like there was a bumper crop of hay that year! If it were Gloucestershire, it should qualify as a Tithe Barn!

This is one of several old postcards contributed to the ‘Grindleford Then and Now’ Exhibition in October 2004.
