C1. This tablet is erected by the inhabitants of Stowe and neighbourhood
to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Trooper John De VILLE
of the 6th Coy Imperial Yeomanry, who volunteered for the sake of his Queen and Country
to join the South African War and who after having pluckily fought several engagements
with the Boers, succumbed at Standerton to the disease of Enteric Fever.
Deeply lamented by his sorrowing family and by all who knew him
on the 17th Feb 1901 in his 22nd year

And Chartley in this county who, serving in the Rifle Brigade
by the age of 25 had attained the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Service Order,
the Military Cross, The Legion D'Honneur and Brevet Majority.
He fell in the Battle of the Somme 20th July 1916
and is buried at Corbie

D1. Benefactors to the poor of the parish of Stowe
Thomas WILKES late Abbots-Bromley in this County, Millwright, deceafed
by his Will dated the 4th day of June 1686 left for the poor, widowers, widows
orphans in Colwich and Stowe parifhes living in Great Haywood, Little Haywood,
Colwich or Bifhton [Bishton], ten pounds or the shillings per annum five shillings of which fum
to be paid to the churchwarden of Stowe yearly for ever to be paid by the Tenant
renting the piece of Ground call'd The Yeld, fituated in Little Haywood aforesaid.
John TOOTH of Droi[n]ton gave twelve shillings a year to the poor of the parish of
Stowe in the year 1692 and default of payment ye overfeers to enter upon the Dole
Of Land in the Broad Meadows in the townfhip of Drointon to be distributed yearly
On Christmafs [Christmas] Day for ever by the Minister and Churchwardens

This Messuage and lands in the townfhip of Drointon and Lea in the parish of
Stowe late Thomas BONDS was purchafed in the year 1719 by different gifts
For the benefit of the poor of the parish of Stowe the rents to be distributed yearly
On Lady Day and Michaelmas Day for ever by the Minister, Churchwardens and Overfeers
The Church was new pew'd in the year 1795 by George DAWSON & Edward SMITH
Churchwardens, Tthree of which pews are for the ufe of the poor of this parish Viz No 12, 13 & 14
he expence of which was defrayed out of the rents ariseing from the purchafe of Lands late
Thomas BONDS as above mentioned in the year 1719
