Inside St Swithin's Church, Compton Bassett

Recent Photograph of Inside St Swithin's Church (Compton Bassett)

I had not been here before and for some reason I had completely forgotten about what is inside - hence it blew me away on entering, a wonderful stone rood screen, its coving extending west and supported on an ornate three arched opening on slim pillars, the latter carrying small niches with (renewed) figures. Pevsner refers to a West Gallery - this has now gone but the frontage seems preserved as a raised pew at the rear of the church in front of the blocked tower arch. Medieval nave roof, transitional north arcade with a variety of capitals and some good detailing in the chancel which is by Henry Woodyer.
