Guidepost at Knouchley, Stoke

Recent Photograph of Guidepost at Knouchley (Stoke)

The visible lettering on this Guidepost says “To Sheffield”. It stands on the right of the public footpath past Knouchley Farm coming up from the Stoke (east) direction.

It seems possible that the Grindleford turnpike route might have passed this way once, closer to the farm than the present B6001 which does a dog- leg around the Knouchley ‘headland’ both bypassing the farm, and avoiding the steeper gradient mentioned by Farey in 1817 as 1 in 6.[1]
