Pictures of the Past : Calver Sough, Calver

Old Postcard of Calver Sough (Calver)

The houses on this postcard will be instantly recognisable today, approaching Calver Sough from the Bakewell direction. Other buildings now occupy what here is empty space.

One habitation which is not there any more is the old railway carriage - the long, low dwelling which can be seen in the middle distance where the road curves round to the right to climb Knouchley hill. It's probably difficult to make out - directly behind the solitary tree trunk above the white milestone marker on the footpath. The carriage provided a home for someone in the years following WWII when housing was in short supply. It came complete with running water - the nearby Stoney Middleton Brook - which passes underneath the road at that point.
