War Memorial - Grindleford, Derbyshire“There's a fine roll of honour where the maypole once stood The Memorial is a Celtic Cross set on a series of tapering square plinths, surrounded by a low retaining wall and railings. It is located at the old centre of the village - literally where the Maypole used to be, adjacent to the former Methodist Chapel and opposite the Sir William Hotel. Kelly's Directory of 1932 records that it was “erected in 1922 to 17 men of this township who fell in the Great War, 1914-18”. Over the years, the stones had become encrusted with algae from the nearby cupressus trees, but in 2001, the Parish Council had the Memorial renovated. This photograph shows its newly restored state.
