Pictures of the Past : West End of Dale, Stoney MiddletonThis postcard is undated, and was never posted, but it's interesting to speculate the timescale it portrays. This is how the Dale would have looked like before quarrying gouged it out, which emphasises how “recent” this took place in geological time, just over a century ago, since by definition the postcard must be late 1890s-early 1900s, certainly no earlier than 1894. I understand this type of ‘photographic illustration’[1] began to appear on postcards after that date, when a directive from the Post Office allowed for cards that were privately printed to be sent through the post.
