Stoney Middleton - Sketch of The Cross

Black and White Sketch of The Cross (Stoney Middleton)

Another sketch (based on an old postcard) where it feels as if one could just step into the picture and walk down that street!

The Cross on the left is at the junction of the High Street with The Dale (A623). A view looking in the opposite direction may be seen on a modern photograph of The Moon Inn.

Although it isn't apparent now, this junction must have been a major crossroads in packhorse and stagecoach days. The road which bears to the left in this sketch, which now leads only into “The Nook”, may have crossed over the Middleton Dale Brook, and probably have continued up the hillside towards Eyam, via “Jacob's Ladder”.
