Tomb of Sir Sampson Meverell, Tideswell

Recent Photograph of Tomb of Sir Sampson Meverell (Tideswell)

Sir Sampson Meverell's Tomb stands in the centre of the Chancel in St John the Baptist's Church in Tideswell. He fought at Agincourt, and the brass inlay around the tomb details his path through life, which led him through ‘eleven great Battayles in France within the space of two years’. Sir Sampson thus earned his knighthood and was subsequently appointed Knight Constable. There is a stone effigy of a wasted corpse wrapped in a winding sheet inside alabaster tracery around the tomb (not visible on this photo).
