Pictures of the Past : West End of Dale, Stoney Middleton

Old Postcard of West End of Dale (Stoney Middleton)

This postcard is undated, and was never posted, but it's interesting to speculate the timescale it portrays. This is how the Dale would have looked like before quarrying gouged it out, which emphasises how “recent” this took place in geological time, barely a century ago, since by definition the postcard must be late 1800s-early 1900s.

I found a useful account of the history of the Picture Postcard, which suggests this type of ‘photographic illustration’ began to appear on postcards after 1894, when a ruling by the British Post Office allowed for privately printed post cards to be sent through the post.
