People of Stoney Middleton - Woodwork Class (1938)

Old Photograph of Woodwork Class (1938) (Stoney Middleton)

The people on the photograph are:-

Standing (left to right): Mr. G. Nugent, Mr. B. Milner, Mr. S. Froggatt, Mr. H. Groves,
Mr. E. Groves, Mr. C. Hallam, Mr. J. Heginbotham.
Seated (left to right): Mr S. L. Mason, Miss Andrew, Mrs G. Goddard, Mr Peters (instructor),
Miss D. Riddlesden, Mrs. R. Rowland.

The occasion is the opening of an exhibition by the students of the ‘Stoney Middleton Evening Institute’ of their work. The opening was introduced by Mr. S BIRKS, Assistant Director of Education for Derbyshire, and exhibits included embroidery, leather work, basket work, wood carving, appliqué work, painted fire screens and tapestry. Mr T. SHAW (chairman of the local committee) presided, and a vote of thanks to Mr. BIRK was proposed by Councillor P. J. TURNER (Grindleford) and seconded by Mr. T. PETERS (Stoney Middleton).

The newspaper cutting was sent to me by Miss Amy Schofield, whose mother had kept it following its publication in ‘The Derbyshire Times’ of April 29th 1938. A second photograph of ‘Miss Andrew, who is over 60 years of age’ (with some of her exhibits) also accompanied the article, saying ‘She has only been a member of the class for a year.’.

Amy's mother, Lilian SCHOFIELD (née ANDREW), was the daughter of James ANDREW, Miss ANDREW's brother, and his wife Annie Eliza STOREY.
